This readathon is hosted by leaninglights on YouTube and will run from today, July 25th, until Friday, July 31st. You can see the announcement video here.
My personal goal for this readathon is to cut down the number of books I am currently reading, as almsot all of them fit one of the challenges posed. So, this is my TBR for the readathon.
1. The first book in a series
I picked this up on recommendation from Alicia @ A Kernel of Nonsense and so far, I’m really enjoying it. I don’t know whether to call it historical fiction or romance or (historical) magical realism, but there’s something about the characters and the world and the writing that has me a little entrance.
2. Sequel in a series
This is my book club pick for the week, and I’m supposed to have it read by 2 on Tuesday. I really hope that amazon gets it delivered in time for me to read it, but at least it’s short. And no, I have not actually read the first five books in the series.
3. Out of your comfort zone
When I initially started reading this, I was a bit put off because it was darker than I thought it would be. Horror, while intriguing, tends to be a little out of my comfort zone for the pure fact that blood and guts isn’t really my thing. I do want to finish this so I can get a review up for blogging for books.
4. On your shelf over a year
Sooooo I was supposed to have this finished quite some time ago. Unfortunately, I put it down and haven’t picked it back up. Now, I have some extra motivation, and I hope to finish it up quickly. Maybe I’ll even pick up the last book in the series.
5. Most recently hauled book
This is honestly the book I’m the most excited for. I’ve been following the author Jenna Moreci on YouTube (her writing videos are both useful and amusing) and on Twitter, and when she started looking for a street team for her new book, I signed up immediately. I am so happy to say I got an eARC of this book and I’ll be reviewing it next week, so I better finish it quickly! Considering how much I’m loving it, that won’t be hard~
Thanks for reading!

Oh, I love Grave Mercy! I consider it historical fantasy with a romance subplot, although the magical aspects get more pronounced as the series go on, so Grave Mercy might be more magical realism than fantasy.

I just wonder about it because I wonder how real some of the magic is and how much of it we’re supposed to consider faith (which, arguably, isn’t magical realism but reality in some eyes).

That’s a fair point. Maybe it’s because I’m an atheist, but I consider any kind of physical manifestation of divine power to count as magic. I can understand the opposite POV, though.

I tend to go that way, too, but this has me thinking about perspective and how much that matters in describing genres. It doesn’t even necessarily feel like divine power, in part because of the nature of the magic cast, but at the same time… I’ll probably end up waffling about it for some time.
